A lot of organizations, in the wake of the horrific murder of George Floyd, made declarations, wrote statements and posted black squares. While people and organizations felt good, a longitudinal look at the effects have shown that it hasn't led to safer spaces for those who live with marginalized identities. If anything, coupled with the push to hire DE&I roles, it has made it less safe.
In this workshop we'll look at what it takes to push past the J.E.D.I. (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) trends set in 2020, and examining the everyday commitment at individual and organizational levels required to create truly safe spaces and a community.
We might examine what giving power away really looks like, shared language, vision, collaboration, listening, empathy, accountability, and the reality of mistakes and failure in this work.
